Peer Tutoring

The Division of Statistics and Scientific Computation is proud to offer a new program to our Undergraduate students – Peer Tutoring! This is a paid service through Bevo Bucks.

Who it’s for:

This pilot service is available to SSC undergraduates currently enrolled in SSC 302, 304, or 306. We have a limited number of tutors available, so tutor assignment will be on a first-come first-served basis.

How it works:

You come into our office here at the SSC (WCH 2.104) and request a tutor. We’ll ask you some questions (mainly about the time you prefer to be tutored) and have you fill out some paperwork. We’ll then ask you for your student ID to confirm that you have enough Bevo Bucks for at least the first session ($15 for a one hour long session). Once that’s confirmed, we’ll set you up with your tutor. Every time you meet with your tutor we’ll charge your Bevo Bucks account – so make sure to keep it fully funded! If you would like tutoring, please download and complete this contract for your first visit to our offices.

Who are the tutors:

This is the great part about this program. All our tutors are students who have taken your enrolled course in the past. Not only have they received an A in their course but they also come highly recommended by their professors. In addition, all the tutors will be meeting with our tutor mentor during the semester to keep them up to speed on what’s being covered in the class. To see our tutors – and read a little about them – click here.

Who we can’t help:

Currently, we can only help those students in SSC 302, 304, or 306 in this program. We cannot help students in other classes. We do however have a list of graduate students who are willing to help others, but we do not regulate or guarantee them in any way. Click here for a list of NON-PEER TUTORS.

I didn’t expect to enjoy SSC 302 as much as I did after I completed taking this course last Spring. The subject was sometimes extremely difficult to grasp and many topics were challenging but spending countless of hours outside of class studying, I began to form a deeper understanding for the course and understood the purpose of statistics. Been having completed the class, I can understand how frustrating statistics can get when the concepts get complicated but with practice and concentration, one can find that it becomes fun and interesting when statistics begins to become relevant to real life. I enjoy tutoring and am great at working one on one with people for I can be depended on to be motivating, patient and responsible.  So just as I succeeded in the class, I would love to help future students to also succeed in the course as well. From the experience I earn from this opportunity, I hope to spread my knowledge about this course and aid those who need the extra help.

I thought my SSC class last semester was really great! I definitely learned a lot and I would like to help future students see just how applicable statistics really are. I have past tutoring experience with high school and college students in various math and chemistry courses, and I think I do a good job of explaining concepts in ways that are easy to understand.

Statistics can be quite tricky. Having to know which test to run, the different equations, and the right words to use to explain the tests can all come together and make a confused and frustrated student. When I first started this class, I was that student. But with help, I was quickly able to get past all the confusion and see how applicable Statistics can be compared to all the other types of math. I’m excited to be a SSC tutor because I would love to see the moment my peers understand the material and appreciate what they are learning. I have prior experience of being a tutor so I know being a one means being dedicated and patient. I think all of these qualities will make me a great SSC peer tutor.

I enjoyed and excelled in my statistics course last semester and would like the opportunity to help other students do well. I have had past experience tutoring throughout high school within the National Honor Society, and I have always enjoyed tutoring and working one on one with people. I also helped other students within my statistics course last semester before quizzes and feel I was beneficial in helping them. I am patient and dedicated when working with a student and have always worked hard to ensure that the student fully understands the material. I am reliable and can be depended upon to make this position a priority. I hope to gain experience from this opportunity as I plan to continue my education in graduate school and hope to become a TA.

I used to have a lot of trouble with Statistics when I first enrolled into the class, but after the first week I started developing an interest in statistics because I learned how to make it relevant to real life. I was able to teach myself concepts by applying it to life situations and I was also able to help some of my classmates learn harder concepts through example. I haven't just learned how to work problems out of a statistics textbook, but I've also learned recognizing when and where certain concepts need to be applied. I'm also incredibly patient and I'm able to translate textbook language into "layman's terms" quite eloquently.

I truly enjoyed being in the SSC 304 course last spring semester. I came in with no previous knowledge of statistics and the word 'statistics' itself scared me from the beginning. However, when I actually started learning and seeing how what I have learned applies in real life, statistics became really fun. I understand how statistics can be overwhelming at first since there are so many terms to remember and numbers to calculate. Here's the thing though, statistics consist of repeating patterns. Once you can recognize these patterns, it gets easier to make sense out of all the variables and numbers. I would like to help other students understand how statistics work, how to solve problems, and eventually apply it in real life. I have overcome my own difficulties in the course and I honestly believe that other students will benefit from my experience as well. I have been tutoring my peers since middle school and have been fairly successful in the process. I will try my very best to assist every student in the process of learning statistics by utilizing what I have learned in the SSC 304 course.
